We all love using free public WIFI, but very few people know that it is not much secure.

Free WIFI is mostly found in the following places:

  • Airport and Airplanes
  • Internet cafes
  • Coffee shops and restaurant
  • Train stations and trains
  • Bus stations and buses

You must try not to open any website in such places that have your any sort of secured data

Some of the things that you can do to secure your wireless network are explained below.

1) Automatic WiFi Connect

You will have to disable it so that your device doesn’t connect with any unsecured wireless connection.

2) SSL

SSL refers to secure socket layer. It increases the security of websites. Try to open those websites on public WiFi that have SSL enabled on them.

3) Software Upgrade and Antivirus:

Upgrading your device’s software and using antivirus can protect your wireless connections.

4) Encryption

It is of following types:

  • WEP
  • WPA
  • WPA2

WPA2 is the most secure.

5) VPN

Using a VPN creates a sort of data tunnel on your network.

It protects your data online form hackers. You can easily access your data remotely by using it.

It prevents identity theft online by providing an extra security layer.

6) DHCP Server:

DHCP refers to Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol.

Its responsibility is to issue the IP address to the devices on the network.

By disabling it, you can secure your connection.

This is because you will disable it then new devices will not be allowed to automatically connect your wireless network as no automatic IP address would be issued in this case.

7) What is MAC Address Filtering?

By MAC address filtering you will allow only selective devices to connect your network. It maintains a filter for connecting devices to your network.

8) SSID

SSID refers to the Service set identifier. It is included in the router’s default settings to make your SSID visible to the devices within your range.

To protect your network, you will need to disable this broadcasting.
